IM Bots Caught my interest this morning

Filed under: General — russell @ 6:44 am

IM Bots have caught my interest this morning as I spend a significant time IMing or connected to IM (with my new Treo). My mind is racing with the possiblities. IM would make a very nice messaging platform for standard applications. I am thinking about BAM applications with integrated notifications. Alot of this stuff is written in Perl. Either way here is some links to stuff:

MSN Bot Service http://nice.27h.com/index_en.htm

Still trying to find some sample AIM bot code for .Net.... Ahah! found it VB6 only it seems:

Although AIM kinda sux because people just warn the crap out of yoru bot disabling it.

A friend sent me this this morning. Looks very promising. It is a cross platform report writing tool for PHP. Seems very interesting but I have not tried it yet.

SQL Server Desktop Edition

Filed under: General — russell @ 10:29 am

With SQL Server 2005 MS is changing thier pricing and distribution scheme. It may be worthwhile for developer to embrace the MSDE 2000 version. There are admin tools available very cheaply or FREE, for it here:

http://www.msde.biz/msdeadmin/msdeadmin.htm

a more expensive tool: http://www.teratrax.com/tdm/index.html

Another free Query tool: http://www.toadsoft.com/toadsqlserver/toad_sqlserver.htm

Another slightly expensive tool, but looks nice: http://www.valesoftware.com/products-msde-manager.php

And a very expensive tool (NOTE: I used their managers for Open Source DBs like MySQL and Postgres and they are VERY VERY nice): http://www.sqlmanager.net/products/mssql

Nice Looking free tool: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/dbamgr.html

A very nice list I found after writing this can be found here: http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2442

Nice academic paper organizer

Filed under: General — russell @ 9:29 am

Free online academic paper bookmarker. It looks interesting I may try it. I have been using netsnippets and really like that but it is local to my machine. I am thinking I may use my gmail account and a nice online bookmarker and write something that syncs my bookmarks to gmail.... hmmmm.

Treo 650 and podcasting

Filed under: General — russell @ 9:26 am

With my recent purchase of my treo 650 (good bye pocket pc pda AND windows smartphone with no keyboard)... I am really getting into always having and MP3 player with me (did I mention the battery life is GREAT!??!?)... I always have my phone. I have now hooked my treo up to my car stereo using a cassette adapter. It is working great: over 1000 songs on a SD card -- can you say click click shuffle?

Anyway, I love having that much music always with me, and the music keeps going even when i get out of the car (think personal theme music). Enough ranting. This morning I was looking at podcasts again, and really beginning to feel it. That technology is maturing quickly and I think I will trying to listen a little more: http://audio.weblogs.com/

Treo 650

Filed under: General — russell @ 9:29 am

I just bought a treo 650 and hacked it to work on verizon's network. It is hot. I am using thier 1xRTT network (free nights and weekends) and I could not ask for a better phone. This phone is SICK!

Over the weekend while out riding in the car (not driving) I was sending IMs, writing an e-mail and working on a simple word document (via terminal services) all from the Treo. Crazy! I have loaded my SD card with about 100 MP3s and use it as an MP3 player. This week I bought an adpater so I can use a cassette adapter in my cars tape player. You can see the adapter here:

Basically have a sweet hands free phone and MP3 player for my car -- the battery life is way long enough. I am really feeling this phone.
